The Saddle Shoe

Saddle shoes are seldom spotted in today's world, but I believe it is a plus to insert them into your shoe rotation. Now I admit, I would not wear them everyday, or every week for that matter. However, they are undoubtedly classics, and they fit within the Ivy League/WASP style. Their height of popularity was probably in the 50s, and they were common among professors and students at Ivy League schools. They are a casual shoe, and they come in different color combinations. The saddle shoes pictured above are navy and bone, and they would look great with a blue blazer, chinos, oxford button-down shirt, and repp tie. Saddle shoes with brown and bone/ivory or brown and brown suede look good with a tweed jacket and chinos. Also, consider the photo from the camel hair jacket post. Imagine the outfit displayed with gray flannel trousers and brown and ivory saddle shoes. Saddle shoes can also be worn with a casual suit (tweed, seersucker, chino).

I have the Henley model posted on Ralph Lauren's website. I wear them to work once a week or every other week depending on my mood. They get lots of looks because saddle shoes aren't seen much anymore. Too many disgusting square toe shoes from second rate fashion designers like Kenneth Cole.

I love saddle shoes, and I wear mine often. I also agree with the comment about square toe shoes. They are disgusting ):

Something else to consider is the all leather saddle shoe, that works for situations calling for something a bit more formal that white, and black or brown saddle.

Alden makes a great line of all leather, non buck saddles. One of the best that you seldom see is 9942, available at Shoemart. Tan base, and black cordovan saddle.

Made especially for Shoemart. You will never see anyone else wearing them, and they are great for blazers, any sport jacket, khakis, sweaters, etc.

Suzanne,

I would love to see the gucci loafers, and it is funny that you mentioned cars. I was looking for pictures of cars for a future post late last night.

Richard, I see that one of the pair of shoes listed is from J Crew but could I trouble you to name the other brands you have listed? Always in the market for saddle shoes. Thanks

The top pair is either Bass or Johnston & Murphy. I have seen the color combination at both stores; however, I would be a little wary of Bass. I have not owned a pair of Bass shoes since I was a kid, and I am not sure of their quality.

The other shoes are from the Dehner Company, and the pair on the model are from Ralph Lauren.

I am a married male 53 years old and have two pair of saddle Shoes. One is a Calloway NON-Golf shoe...leather sole, white buck with dark brown leather saddle. The other is the classic Bass Dirty Buck, brown saddle and tan suede with red soles and the green Bass tag. The latter pair is my favorite. They are the thrid pair I have worn of the same style in the past 20 years or so. You cannot find this traditional style anymore and Bass stopped making their round toe traditional saddle shoes.
The Calloways are great after Memorial day at dressier casual dinners and at the club. I had a pair of Navy and White saddle shoes and wore them out. They are still available through a web site called Muffy's, a mail order exclusively for saddle shoes, and occasionally at Ralph's stores, though they are $500.00 a pair.
My wife likes the look as well.
Though I cannot say that the reson I wear them goes to my youth, but I wore saddle shoes until I was 8-9(unfortunately worn with with outfits that were a bit sappy) then again when I was in college...perhaps this 53 year old seeks the fountain of youth through my feet.

I LOVE these shoes, but I can't seem a place to buy them. Does anyone know where to purchase them? I know it's almost a year after the fact but I must know.
Thanks

I have 16 pair of saddle shoes that are in several color combos. Since I have purchased all of them one or two pair at a time, and change off, so that it would take sometimes weeks to rotate around to the first pair worn.

I have Bass, Florsheim, Ducks Head, Muffy's Enterprises, Nunn-Bush, Joseph A Banks, Dr Martins, and Rockport.

Color combos, Blk/Wht, Brn/White, Blu/Beige, Rd/Wht, Brn/Tn, and 1 pair in solid Black, and 1 pair solid Burgandy
