The Windowpane Suit/Sport Coat

How often do you see a windowpane suit or sport coat? Probably, not that often; however, it is truly a classic pattern, and it has its place in a classic wardrobe. I think most men fear the pattern, and they fear it due to the fact that it could complicate the rest of the ensemble. Now, I admit, the windowpane jacket does take some skill to pull off, and you should not make it your first suit purchase. There are other basic suits that belong in a classic wardrobe first. The model above is from Brioni, and I like the tie and shirt combination (a pocket square is needed). It would be possible to mix three patterns (suit, shirt, tie), but I believe one should keep either the shirt or tie plain to start things off.

Sorry, but I fail to see anything classic at all about the windowpane design or about the clash between the cloth and the tie.
The wasp-waisted cut of the jacket makes it even worse.
(I checked my calendar to make sure it wasn't April the 1st).

anonymous,

sorry, to disappoint and you are entitled to your opinion. However, I do disagree, and I believe the windowpane design is truly a classic. Alan Flusser makes reference to the pattern on numerous occasions in "Dressing the Man", and the Duke was very fond of the pattern.

I enjoy your blog very much. I just picked up a window pane suit myself and have received many compliments.

Great post. Windowpane is classic. I have suits from Oxxford, Southwick, and HSM in a windowpane pattern. I do consider them appropriate for office wear, as windowpane is less obvious than a full plaid or checked suit. I have worn these suits with checked shirtings--as long as the tie is plain.

i like the combo here..
my big question.. what sort of trousers do you pair with it?

Suzanne,

There are a few different options with this particular jacket. One, the trouser could match the jacket for a suit. In addition, a pair of gray flannel trousers, or khaki trousers could work as well. Hope that helps.

Love the combo. I agree that a lighter grey or a khaki pant would look great with it.

Speaking about the windowpane pattern in general, I feel they're an interesting and refreshing look compared to the same old stand byes like solid navy. However, I do understand why not everyone may look great in them. I have no problems wearing one for business even though many say it's more for casual wear without the tie. Who says we all have to power dress in solid or pinstripe black, gray, or navy like CEOs are expected to. The window pane patterns come in nice earth tones.

My windowpane suit is my finest suit and has a very faint stripe. Works in any situation and still pulls off formal.
