Casino Proper

Daniel Craig: Casino Royale

Visiting an elegant casino provides an excellent opportunity to wear evening wear. For a brief moment, I am going to forget about the tourists in Las Vegas wearing their t-shirts and fanny packs on their hips. Instead, I am going to focus on an illustrious world where characters like James Bond and the Rat Pack would feel at home. If you are wearing anything less than a tuxedo with a black tie, you are underdressed in my opinion. I prefer a spread collar like Daniel Craig is wearing in the photo, but a wing collar is also correct. Your tuxedo should be black or midnight blue (Duke's color of choice). And for goodness sakes, please wear a self-tie bow. Do not even consider a black neck tie! It is not cool, and it is not hip. It is simply incorrect! Your jacket can have either a peak lapel or a shawl collar. The feet should be decorated with black patent leather lace ups, opera pumps, or velvet slippers. Gold cuff links and an elegant gold watch will finish the look. Also, keep in mind that you do not have to play cards or gamble to visit a casino. It can be a wonderful social arena. However, if you decide to play cards, be sure to have a Bond Girl type like Eva Green come by to give you a kiss. You just might distract the dealer or your opponents enough to win a couple hands.

Terrific blog! One other comments re formalwear: Never wear anything other than a black bowtie with a DJ (don't even THINK about showing up in a matching red tie and cummerbund), with only the RAREST of exceptions (tropical climate/private "theme" party) and even then think very hard about whether its appropriate. Better to be perfectly classic than "fun"...

Richard,

Could you please tell me a casino where one would not be completely out of place in a tuxedo? Vegas is more tank top attire. Even Monte Carlo is rather casual these days.

Thanks.

I didn't think wasps went to casinos.

I want to be a bond girl just to be able to wear that fabulous black dress. The hair is also to die for!
Stumbled across this blog today http://sleevehead.blogspot.com/ (it reminded me of yours.)
I am so glad to be back to blogging and hope to be on the blackjack table when I take my next trip to Sin City in July. Loving your blog. You've inspired me to care once again about what I wear and ditch the sweat pants once and for all. I am an Ann Taylor kinda a girl and recently bought a fabulous white classic suit. Just need the right scarf to go with it.

Richard,
I was checking out the AAAC site, per your suggestion and was quite amused.

My question would be; why are they reading your blog; to get to know you, to see what you have to say, to check up on your writing/grammar skills, to see if you live better then them, or to see what your opinion of clothes is?

I read it for your take on clothing - I don't care if you practice what you preach, if you have a house with a library - or a house with removable wheels. I don’t care if you have what you write about or write about what you wish you had.

I have seen many blogs, most of them suck - so I don't keep reading them.

It’s a free country! If they don’t like you, your opinion, or what you think, they can always click the button on the header labeled "NEXT BLOG.”

It’s great how folks find is easy to pick something apart when most of them don’t have the talent to do it on their own, or lack the intestinal fortitude to submit them selves to the scrutiny.

Keep on posting!

anonymous,

I would have to say Monte Carlo is a good as they come. However, I agree, it does have a casual atmosphere of late. After writing the post, I realized I was imagining what I thought casinos should be. My suggestion for myself and others is to have casino night at your home. Invite guest and make it a black tie affair.

Thanks for the response, Richard. I agree that it would be nice if more casinos were still for well dressed people. I wanted to make sure I was not missing a secret spot.
