The Comfort of One's Library

There is no room in my home more comforting than my library. I spend many hours each week reading and reflecting in this sacred room. The wood, books, and leather give the room a comforting aroma that helps one dig deep into their soul. I actually spent about two hours in my library tonight after dinner. It was rather chilly in the house (transition of seasons, it is either too hot or too cold in the house), so I put a log on the fire and warmed up. I read and smoked a CAO cigar. My attire was an old tweed jacket, gray flannels, and an oxford cloth button down shirt. I also enjoy wearing my smoking jacket or shawl collar sweater while spending precious moments in the library. My recommendation is to find a room that is not used often, and convert it into a library (if you don't have one already).

Nice library! I am envious.

I recently purchased a Brooks Brothers navy smoker (at a nice discount) and can heartily recommend it to one and all. From past (and thinner) experience, I can attest that Paul Stuart does a fine one too.

richard i love a man's library! they are so fun. they seem so off-limits to gals, yet cozy.. fatherly? my father used to smoke cigars & even a pipe from time to time.. it's wonderful!

Wonderful post Richard. A library is the perfect place for a time of relaxation and solace. I use mine often and have found it to be a place were I am not only able to reflect on the events of the day, but also to slow down and get lost in my thoughts and a fine smoke.

Hi Richard, Is this a picture of your library? If so, who did you have fit it for you. I've been looking for designers/contractors for this sort of thing on the 'net. Currently, we live in a residence from the 1400s and I’m looking to replicate my current study when we relocate to North America. Any input from others would be welcome as well.

In reading this post, I am reminded of my late grandpa's library. It was not fancy, but still it had all the elements - ceiling to floor shelves, a cozy chair, that woodsy-pulpy scent...

He lived in Connecticut and I was not able to see him all that often, so it was a great bonding experience to hang out with him in the library and talk shop. I always wished I'd stuck with my original career goal, an English Lit professor, which he said was a "noble profession". :)

My only requirement when we moved into our new home was that I get a room to be my study. One of the best ideas I ever had. It is a room of great comfort.

I to enjoy cigars from CAO. For awhile the Mx2 was my cigar of choice but I also enjoy the Brazilia, and the America.

Take care and keep posting.

Jeff

ryan,

the picture is very similar to my library. My wood is slightly lighter, and I have leather chairs instead of the cloth. Other than that, the layout is very similar. I tried to take photos of my personal library, but the clarity of the photos was not good. I don't know who to recommend since I decorate my own home. It is something I enjoy, and I did not hire anyone. Sorry, I could not help.

Richard, Thank you for your response. I expect that I will have to do most of the work myself - built-in bookcases, parkade flooring and such-, but I am hoping to gather design and material ideas over the next few years. The picture you've posted is a perfect start!

As for being rich, anon, not at this point in my career. I live in University accommodation that just happens to be very old, as a provision of my current contract. I will miss my library when I leave. Since I do a lot of my work from home, I will need space in our new place and I would prefer the style and atmosphere of a study/library to a simple, spare-bedroom home office.
