This past weekend, my wife and I went out for dinner and a movie. We began our evening at a lovely steakhouse, and we both enjoyed our filet mignon. Medium rare for me of course, and medium well for the lady. I may go for rare soon. Anyway, we had a great dinner, and we planned to see a comedy. However, upon arriving we saw that the new Henry VIII film was playing "The Other Boleyn Girl". The movie is excellent! It is full of intrigue, deceit, and scandal. For the evening, I sported my newest Brooks Brothers Golden Fleece sport coat, rust colored wool tie, button down shirt, cream cords, wool square, and suede lace ups. The jacket is one of my few jackets that is off the rack. I liked the pattern and design so much that I gave in and bought one off the peg. I normally prefer a two button jacket, but having a few three button coats in the wardrobe is not a bad idea. After arriving at the movie..............

I quickly began to notice the adult wardrobe choices for the evening. Not that I had high expectations, but I found that most men don't care enough about their ladies to dress a little for them. So many women obviously took the time to doll up a little, but so many men, well.... I only saw two men (other than myself) that had on a jacket and tie. In addition, I saw one gentleman with a jacket, and three with sweaters and dress pants. These gents looked nice, and I observed that they opened doors and treated their ladies with respect. I guess the point of this story is that most men don't dress for dinner and a movie any more. I guess I am a romantic, and I imagine a time when the general population spent a little extra time to look presentable in public. Oh well, I guess I have my imagination.

I have been into argyle socks of late, and possibly abusing their use in my wardrobe. My pants are not cuffed. I had them tailored during my brief moment of indecision (cuffs or without, which is more traditional?).

Richard,
Huzzah! Huzzah!, Hear Hear!, More power to you!
I'm about to give up going to concerts because men in the audience don't have the common decency to show their respect for the members of the orchestra and the audience by dressing properly, where "properly" simply means a tie and jacket, not a t-shirt and jeans, i.e. appropriate gard for mowing the lawn.
Sorry, "gard" should have been "garb". Can you correct the spelling? Anger affected my spelling.
Excellent post, Richard. Very nice jacket.
When in doubt, cuff.
You wrote: "...most men don't care enough about their ladies to dress a little for them."
You hit the nail on the head here, IMVHO. Dressing well is a sign of respect; it is a form of politesse. It demonstrates a positive regard for those around you. When I see adults (i.e., people who should know better) dress like slobs, which is pretty much all the time here in Southern California, I interpret it as a 'f*ck you!' gesture. It is at these moments that I wish duelling were not outlawed.
Good for you!
Have you found a source for good over-the-calf argyles? Please share.
Mix a patterned shirt in there and you're breathing some rare air, friend.
And yes, as LBT says, when in doubt, cuff.
love the jacket. i'd like a patterned shirt too..
this post puts me in the mood for lamb chops. (poor lambs, but they shouldn't taste so good)
Richard,
I applaud you on putting in effort for your wife. So many men do not. My wife is currently pregnant and quite insecure about her looks at the moment. Getting dressed up and taking her out makes her feel like a million dollars. It makes me sad to look at others out on dates, where the gentleman has put it precisely $1.95 worth of effort. Applause to you, my friend.
easy and elegant life - I don't know a good source for over the calf argyle socks. I buy mine at Ralph Lauren and Brooks Brothers, but they are not over the calf. I find that a good quality sock will stay up for the most part with occasional adjusting.
LBT- I wish dueling were allowed as well.
suzanne- lamb chops mmmmmm love them!
turling - thanks for the compliments!
A self-professed WASP with a darted jacket? What is the sartorial world coming too?
I would lost the photo with the newspaper. You just let a lot people know the general area in which you live...
tintin,
thanks, I never noticed the paper's articles! I wasn't thinking! I took it off, thanks again!
