First, I extend my apologies for not posting last night. I have been tied up with work of late, and I have not been able to maintain my routine of posting at night before bed. In addition, I have decided to do only one post on weekends. The number of hits drop tremendously on the weekend, and I don't want to waste opportunities for dialogue and debate. Now, let us get on with today's post! The Ivy League is without question a major part of the WASP lifestyle. An individual's school is very important to the WASP culture, and Ivy League schools were at one time the center of the WASP world. Today, Ivy League campuses are not the picture perfect images we often recall. Regardless, the traditional images created and captured in old photographs is what dominates our thoughts. Students and professors alike wore their attire with class and style. Traditional institutions like J Press clothed the WASP elite, and fortunately, the company continues the tradition today. In addition, I love to look at photos of Ivy League athletic teams, professors, and students. Companies such as J Press and Ralph Lauren are masterful at recreating the traditional Ivy League scenes. Also, movies like Dead Poets Society and School Ties demonstrate what the Ivy League look is all about.

Great post, Richard. The Ivy unis, IMVHO, are too multicultural and non-American today to be considered worthy of consideration. But I think this has been the case since at least the early 1980s. WASP style continues in other venues. For example, I see it quite regularly amongst residents and prep school students in the Bahamas and Bermuda.
Dead Poets Society (one of my favourites!!), School Ties, If..., Another Country -- these are great films featuring the style about which you're writing.
Umm, I don't think an increase in the cultural diversity of the student body has much to do with declining sartorial standards. If anything, it's a reflection of the unfortunate remnants of the anything-goes, if-it-feels-good-do-it, casual-Fridayization of the largely Caucasian Boomer generation and a reflection of the increase of the general level of coarseness in society.
I was in church this Sunday -for what is the most important day of the church calendar and our congregation is almost exclusively white and wealthy -not by design, but rather by circumstance- and the number of men sporting jeans and khakis was appalling.
Boomer-Backlash! I love it! who cares what the "kids today" are wearing...focus on yourself, your wardrobe, your manners, your beliefs, and how you walk through this world. Are you setting a good example? Would someone want to be like you?
Just because they're dressed "natty" doesn't make them Sporting in mind, body, or deed.
