Argyle & Tweed

The fall catalogs and mailers are starting to arrive to my home from my favorite stores, and it appears that argyle will continue to be a centerpiece for many collections. Argyle is a beautiful fall pattern for fall sweaters, and I love pairing it with a tweed sport coat. Other than the popped collar, this add is a perfect example of how to pair argyle with tweed. In addition, the haircut on the gent is classic and very Ivy League. Cold weather, please come soon !!

RL seems to be showing this "tie with round-neck or crew-neck sweater" thing a lot. I've seen it twice now on your blog. I always thought that was a no-no.

I don't think it is a no no to wear a crew neck with a tie. I personally think a crew neck looks great with a bow tie, and I possibly prefer the crew to the v-neck with the bow.

Indeed, V-neck sweaters often seem to say, "Look at me, I am wearing a tie," just a little bit too much.

This is why RL likes to go with the very Preppy/Upper, tie-and-crew-collar look.

Thank you Richard, that's a nice photo. Beautiful tweed and knit.

Yes, the popped collar, unbuttoned cuffs. etc. But I suspect we have the photographer to thank for those.

I usually don't care for ties and crewnecks, (Though that's the look in the UK.) but this looks good. It's about proportion, and the subject doesn't look as if he's being choked. The tie and collar are small enough, and the crewneck opening large enough, to create a pleasing harmony of proportion.

The silk pocket square seems lik a textural clash to me, and I suspect this tie-under-crewneck is similar to the mannequin wearing multiple collared shirts: it's a gimmick to display clothes that real people should not emulate.

Richard, you have such great taste. I wish you'd give us your thoughts on wasp haircuts and styles.

You might find it funny that the model in that picture is actually wearing shorts. Argyle, tweed, and shorts? In the print ads, they cropped the picture so you cannot see the leg.

On the Polo Australian site, they still have the full picture showing cuffed shorts. I am guessing that this shorts look will not catch on too quick.
