WASPy Hair, In My Opinion

A reader recently commented and asked me to elaborate on WASPy hair. The following photos are some examples of WASP hair for men in my opinion. The basic premise for WASPy hair is for there to be a side part, or a swoop to one side. Extremely short hair, hair parted in the middle, or really long hair is definitely not a WASPy haircut.

Richard,
As one who needs to have very short hair, I can tell you the correct crew cut can have a WASP look. Well, OK, maybe not, but I do what I can! Thanks for continuing the blog. Its a great break in the day.

I don't really like the hair cut in picture 1, a men's front head can't be totaly covered with hair. Pictures 2 and 3 are wonderful!

In the 20's and 30's, many archtypical WASPS (i.e. Anthony J.Drexel Biddle, Jr. and F.Scott Fitzgerald) parted their hair in the middle. Note also the WASP tendency to use the first initial, then full middle name.

What about girls?

I am not the best person to give advice about women's hair. The only thing I can say is WASPy girls hair should have a well kept natural appeal. This means no wet looks, or extreme styling. Proper length should be shoulder length or longer (I don't like short hair on women). Head bands and accessories are a plus.

Wonderful post. I'm very particular about men's hair. I'm not a fan of hair on a man's forehead. The hair should be medium length, and, if possible (and this is important), combed back or to the side. The sideburns should be medium-length as well, in my opinion, and the hair combed back over the ears to produce a 'winged' effect. This is one of the defining features of 'Tory Hair'. I detest hairstyles that are too short or too long. The former may be taken as a sign of fanaticism or militarism, whilst the former denotes laziness and vanity. The key is moderation, or the middle way, and to avoid extremes, in keeping with Anglican or Episcopalian sensibilities. At school we were not allowed to let our hair touch our collars, so we grew our hair very long in the front and relatively short in back.

Sounds John Parker Wilson stole somebody's girl.

Get over it.

ouch!! Richard, I have short hair!! That's okay - I still love your blog. Keep up the good work. By the way, I love the way you dress. I see a lot of men at the country clubs in the DC metro area that wear the same things you do. It's very classy, and it's fun to see a man enjoy his clothing so much.

This is how they wear their hair in the south. Usually with a polo, khakis, a pair of grey new balance shoes, and oakleys hanging off their neck. You almost never see people with gel down there. It's a very different story in Chicago.
