The Official Filthy Rich Handbook

I recently received a copy of The Official Filthy Rich Handbook in the mail, and I was asked to review its contents on my blog. At first I was uncertain if the book could live up to the iconic reputation of The Official Preppy Handbook, and I must say I was not disappointed.

The book focuses on today's modern elite, and of course today's rich are a diverse group. Every single personality in the world of the rich and famous is identified, and all their hobbies, vacations spots, etc. are featured. Like the OPH, it is written tongue and cheek, but like the OPH it also has merit. Of course, my favorite portions of the book are the sections focusing on the old money WASPs and their habitat.

I suggest everyone pick up a copy of The Official Filthy Rich Handbook because I am sure bloggers will one day reference it just as they do The Official Preppy Handbook. In the future, when you see the acronym OFRH, you will know what it is referring to. Happy reading!

Richard,
Have you read or heard of the book, Snobbery, by Joseph Epstein? It is loaded with satirical, witty prose addressing the tastes, behaviours and manners of the snobb (both downward and upward looking snob). An entire chapter is devoted to the WASP. Quite a remarkable read.

Hi chaps. These nouveau riche types do nothing for me. (::harrumph::) As a self-proclaimed fogey, I prefer the original. The truly rich, as opposed to the merely rich, I would aver, are not as extravagant as the types portrayed in this book.

My favourite book is "Class: A Guide Through the American Status System" by Paul Fussell. Some things never change...

You guys have got to be kidding me. Are you serious?

What are your thoughts on the likes of Bill Gate, Warren Buffet, Oprah, etc? These are all people who are "Nouveau riche".

I think there is something to be said about someone who pulls themselves up by their boot straps.

I'm not super wealthy by far, but I'm in a high tax bracket. However, this is only due to the likes of my grandfather. Served in WWII; navy man, and when he got back, as a black man, he was told he can pick cotton, be a waiter, etc. Well he picked cotton for less then an hour, and decided that he would not live his life in this manner.

He went to school, and finished with 4 different degrees, and went into Real Estate in CA, and became a multi-millionaire. Now what is wrong with that? That shouldn't be snobbed, but celebrated. That's what this country is all about. The underdog making it through trying times. COMON' you guys, I'm not really getting you. Yeah, I think I'm going to stick around this site for a bit and be the blue collar guy from Caddy Shack.

Are you guys really that out of touch with America?
