Dressing For That Special Day of Giving Thanks

The most important thing about Thanksgiving Dinner is celebrating it with one's family, and giving thanks to God for the blessings we have received. However, looking the part of the All American Ivy League WASP doesn't hurt one's celebratory activities one bit. Featured in the photo is what I wore to a Thanksgiving service this past Sunday night, and I will wear a similar style on Thanksgiving Day. In addition, I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving, and please be safe with all your travels. And finally, I will not be posting tomorrow or Thanksgiving Day. However, I will return with a post late Friday night for Saturday morning readers.

Very Norman Rockwell around the Thanksgiving table. I don't want to be superficial and miss the point of this holiday, but I would give thanks for those alligator loafers! I'm jealous!

Richard,

1) Your left arm is obviously about 1/4" longer than your right arm. Any good tailor should be able to adjust the sleeves on all your jackets and perhaps gently nudge you up one size since you are rather portly and your jackets fit too snuggly.
2) You need to iorn the collar of your shirt. Wash and wear beefy oxfords such as the ones you wear may be billed as "easy care", but easy care is for those who don't care. Learn to use an iron.
3) Your tie knots are terrible. I'm sure you have an old boy scout handbook lying around. You were probably at home with the sniffles while all the other boys were out camping, setting the forest on fire, or thumbing through the scout masters Playboy; but your unused handbook still has some valuable illustrations that would help you overcome your arrested development. Learn as we all did at age twelve how to tie a tie as per the BSA.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving. Take the day on Thursday to give thanks for the little boy you are. On Friday chose to start being a man. Your wife will finally be able to start giving thanks as will all of us.

Richard,

I disagree you are rather portly or that your jackets are to snug.
A good fit in the shoulders is the best guide to choosing a coat size.

You do not need to,nor should you, iron the collars of your OCBD shirts. Hopefully the collar is unlined and has a nice soft roll. This sort of shirt and its collar are not meant to hold a military press. A flat-pressed collar on an OCBD ruins the effect of the easy natural roll for which the collar is well-known.

Your tie knots are not"terrible." A four-in-hand-knot is preferred with a button down collar. Hopefully you learnt how to tie a tie from your father and not from a boy scout manual. As an aside, some of us with presumably greater dexterity learnt to tie our tie before our twelfth birthday.

Presumptions about your choice of childhood activities, your proclivity too take colds, or the organizations you were a part of cannot be supported by looking at the photograph you've provided.

Disagreement about the correctness of your choice of clothes is expected. Unnecessary cruelty is not. There is a not so subtle difference between a sharp wit and naked sarcasm.

Happy Thanksgiving. I mean it.

Richard,

though you and I disagree with pretty much everything, one thing we do agree on is style.

I'm not sure what this Anonymous person is talking about. But in this case I feel that he's got it all wrong. The shirt is fine from what I can see. The tie looks good as well. Though I was never a Boy Scout, I don't think that they taught tie tying, but I could be wrong.

One thing though, I wasn't feeling the socks with this outfit.

I too wish you a very happy Thanksgiving. I'm getting full already just thinking about it.

Great blog, just a quick question. Are those beautiful RL Polo items Made in El Salvador or China? Did you get them from the outlet? I am trying to find the same stuff for myself and was thinking of trying the RL outlet. Can you help?

Thanks Harry.
