As I bring this week to a close, I am truly exhausted from all of the hater comments. I knew these posts would be challenging, but as my picks are criticized, I have yet to see an alternative list. Regardless, my last pick is another Gossip Girl character, and one that I have never featured on this blog.
Nate Archibald is the WASP character on the show Gossip Girl. His family is the Vanderbilts, and he exemplifies casual preppy at its best. Is he as creative as the shows character Chuck Bass? No! His style is simple, but preppy and he is often seen with shirts untucked, etc. This style was referenced in the Official Preppy Handbook as the rebellious preppy, and that is Nate's character to the bone. He is a wandering soul that is trying to figure out where he belongs in this world.
Even though I am bringing this series to a close, I do want to list a few honorable mentions. This list includes, Carlton Banks (Fresh Prince of Bel Air), Ben Stein, and Andre (Outkast).

The shirt untucked preppy look should never be worn by men that have graduated from college. This is a teen/college years rebellious look.

"haters"???
Not haters of you, or your blog, I assure you.
Just haters of thugs masquerading as human beings.
Shirts untucked! What an astute sartorial observation, Richard!
Indeed Richard, haters.
You know I won't say if I like your
blog or not but let me please offer
this objective observation.
I truly believe the average person
would not put up with the crap you
put up with here constantly Richard.
I would've stopped a while ago
not looked back and not cared.
This isn't fun or enjoyable to me,
if I were in your position.
I fail to understand how you gain
any degree of satisfaction from
this experience.
Sorry Richard but this is terribly
strange. It really is worth it?
I get the idea you are receiving
dozens upon dozens of negative
responses ,to the point of we
would all actually be shocked to
know the exact number you delete
on a daily basis.
Well, It wouldn't be worth it to me.
Just my two cents.
Wow, three pictures of Nate in his St. Jude's uniform - now that's Preppy!
I can't help but feel that you really need to branch out your television watching beyond shows that are written for prepubescent girls. I would think a best dressed men on television list should, if you are supposedly accomplishing some aspect of teaching with this blog, consist of gentleman (please take note of that word as 16 year old boys don't count) whom one should try to emulate.
In addition, there is a huge difference between style and fashion. I won't go into further definition, as you should already know this. The two children you have chosen from this television show you are infatuated with are fashionistas. I simply have to point to the photo of the boy wearing argyle socks with spectators and shorts. That's not style, that's trying to be a 12 year old girl.
As two other notes, first I think you should attempt to write a post where you don't ask yourself a question and then scream the answer back to yourself. It is a rather juvenile style of writing. Second, you misspelled television.
Anon. 7:19 - Yes, that is preppy. He is the classic rebellious prep that doesn't care about creativity. He lives in his uniform, sweaters, and OCBD. He is essentially what everybody that criticizes this blog calls a WASP. Who would you have picked.
Anon. 9:37 - Again more criticism from readers, and you don't list anyone to replace my picks. You characters would be lost in an effort to attempt this challenge. I can't even count how many trad blogs have referenced Gossip Girl characters, and when they do......oh, I love those outfits, are the replies. But when Richard uses them.....you are a scoundrel....is that all you got Richard.
NOT ONLY SHOULD YOU IGNORE ALL OF THE HATEFUL COMMENTS, BUT DON'T EVEN REFER TO THEM, AS IT SEEMS TO FURTHER IGNITE THE UNPLEASANT SITUATION.
ONCE AGAIN I SAY TO ALL OF THE PEOPLE WHO "HATE" THIS BLOG, "DON'T
READ IT!!!" HAVE YOU NOTHING BETTER TO DO?
Hey dude. I say you are right on with your best dressed picks. And I am not only a WASP, I am a High WASP. So there.
Richard:
For once I find myself agreeing with your comment that people should mention their own opinions on the best dressed persons on tele. However, this does not consider whether there should be a divide between reality tele personalities or fictional characters or a division between supposed journalists and pundits. With a little structure and perhaps the outright intent of eliciting viewer comments, this posting could have been an amusing catalog of prep or wasp style mass media rather than an ode to Gossip Girl.
This of course discounting the premise that a true wasp would not regard any person, place, thing or style on the tele as anything other than an entertainment with informative veneer for the lowest common denominator of the american public.
The true WASP, the high WASP, has the capacity for an open mind.
No Ms LPC . The counter culture 60's makeover
of the American WASP character are the ones
with the open mind.
The less judgemental, the less standards you
wish to apply in your thinkng Ms LPC ,
the bigger and bigger fool you shall become.
The sterotype criticisms of the WASP
character is EXACTLY what the WASP
community is supposed to be proud of
and never should have felt any shame
in any of its American History.
The old hard nosed conservative
character of yesteryear Ms LPC
which the WASP community is
tradtionally hated for is the HIGH WASP
standard. Not your open minded
were all equal crap.
how about any of these news guys on television that consistently wear tailored suits? These are real people....Fred Barnes or Bill O Reilly from Fox News perhaps? Fred wears the tortoise shell glasses. Bill wears expensive suits that do not appear to be made by Italian designers...I'm just trying to think of real people I know...
I love how Gossip Girl always shows Dan Humphrey dressed wrong. Open collar, dark shirts, unbuttoned jackets. He is always in stark contrast to the more together richies.
So is 'high WASP' like new Coke? Stick with the classic.
Charlie Rose, Jim Lehrer, cripes even Matt Lauer. You know, educated grown men who deliver the news, or social commentary. Not characters in a teen age fantasy.
I don't really give a damn about WASP culture, but I'm pretty sure that 'Gossip Girl' is about as far from it as you can get. It's like using the show MASH as an example of the horrors of army life.
Even Leno and Letterman are heads and tails above these buffoons. Letterman has the strike against him with the open double breasted, but still pastes these children.
The characters on my wifes soap opera dress better, don't ask me their names as I'll never know. Agent Hotchner (sp?) on Criminal Minds. James Lipton from Inside the Actor's Studio. Hell, if you want to branch out from men in conservative suits, even Graham Norton outdoes these teenagers.
I will also ditto Anon at 12:24.
I love that untucked rebellious look so much. Now, I want to have a fitted suits for men and look a rebellious student
