To Pleat Or Not To Pleat

To pleat or not to pleat, that is the question. For me, I say not to pleat but I do own some double forward pleated trousers. However, at least 98% of my wardrobe is flat front trousers with a 1 3/4 inch cuff (occasionally a 2 inch cuff). But, unlike some of the trad community, I don't think a pair of pleated trousers classifies someone as not being preppy/WASPy/Trad, etc. And furthermore, to say that no Ivy League students in good standing wore pleated trousers is silly. Sure, J Press, Chipp and others only sold flat front trousers, but some students did wear pleated pants. Now, as I said earlier, I favor the flat front trouser but pleats are OK!

caringTrad or not, I do not understand how one goes without pleats. What happened to the civilized man?

Flat-front (unpleated) trousers were invented by manufacturers as a cost-cutting innovation.

One of the marks of a good tailor is the ability to produce pleats that lie flat without billowing.

My personal opinion is that unpleated trousers look like workpants.

I'm only a purist in that plain front look better on me. Z. Cavaricci pants are not trad or WASPo.

Item: John Carroll University is not in the Ivy League. http://lib.jcu.edu/page/14326

Item: Stupid freshmen.

Where can I get a freshman beanie, Richard? Those are mad hyphy and I'd totally sport one if I could get my hands on one!

I was taught that pleats require suspenders in order hang correctly. No thanks. Give me a plain front every time.

I feel like I just changed religions but I just switched almost all of my pants from pleated to flat front. For pleated trousers to look right on me, I have to wear them more high-waisted. The only way to do to that properly is with suspenders. And suspenders only work with a jacket and tie or suit which is to dressy for my work environment. So flat fronts it is, simple, classic and actually slimming!

Plain fronts are little boys pants. They are fine when you are in college with a pair of Weejuns but when you are a man you should wear the pants a real man would wear--pleats.

I just like the clean look of plain front. I sorta cringe when I see pleats.
