Growing a Beard Isn't WASP, But Most WASPs Try It!

Growing a beard is certainly not a WASPy thing to do, but I find that most WASP feel the need or desire to do so at some point in their life. Pictured above is a bearded individual (Kevin Rice) who has done a lot of modeling for J Crew and Polo throughout the years. The beard (though not WASPy) looks dignified on the chap, but he is a little young to embark on this journey. Most WASP men who do this are of older stock, but occasionally, some of us younger guys (like the gent above) go for it at a much earlier age. I once grew a beard for about three months, and I rather enjoyed it. The odd thing about my beard was the fact that it was red despite the fact that my hair is a very dark brown. The color caused such a stir that people today still accuse me of coloring my hair. My response is simple, I would never color my hair under any circumstances. It can go gray, I just hope it never goes astray.

A man without a beard is not properly dressed.

I try to grow one every Christmas vacation but the itch just gets the best of me.

Keeping it trimmed and neat is key. I walk about an hour a day from the train to/from work, so I'm exposed to the elements, and a beard is quite welcome. I generally start it over the holiday break, to eliminate the awkward growing in phase. I don't like a beard in the heat.

Yes, when they go camping or something. Upon return to civilization, facial hair is eliminated.
