Even preppies from the 1970s look better than the average person today. Sure, hair was a little longer and belts and lapels were a little too wide. Ugly sideburns also appeared. But, at least the Ivy League traditionalist such as Press and Brooks made very few changes to their lineups. I was born in 1977, but thank goodness I didn't grow up during this decade.

It was a most horrible decade in all ways, sir, not just sartorially.
Good-looking people. An increasingly rare species. The 'average person of today' looks nothing like them because, well, they are not the same people--literally! The new fashions we are going to see in this country, thanks to the populations that have been imported to replace authentic Americans, will make the 1970s seem like a glorious decade of true style.
The 1970's were horrible for fashion in general.
I'm going to stand by the argument that the '70s were the golden age of prep. I'll also argue that today's "Trad" (love it or hate it) is more firmly rooted in '70s prep than either '60s ivy or '80s Ralph-Lauren-mass-market prep.
