Summer Is Here

It was almost 90 degrees today, and yellow clouds of pollen filled the air. My allergies have been under control, and today I felt a little peppy. In the spirit of warm weather, I broke out my madras tie today and I paired it with:

J Press 3/2 Sack Blazer
J Crew flat front khakis, 2 inch cuff
Polo OCBD
J Crew Red Socks
Bass Weejuns

The tie pattern is great, but the narrow proportion is not that flattering. I'm not to sure if the red socks are really working, but it's nice to finally see some appropriate shoes

Are my eyes playing tricks on me?
Or do I detect a progression in a rounder, oval sillouette in this photo. Please note the lines rounding from the shoulder curving outwards, and then tapering back inward anywhere below the elbows. A double breasted blazer works remarkably well to streamline middle aged bulging.
Nice job on the Weejuns!

Ivy League,

It is not the best photo, and let's not start the Richard is fat thing again. I am smaller today than I was when I peeled off my shirt for a post before Christmas.

Ivy...it is just a an unflattering camera angle...and the unpressed/uncreased khakis accentuate the camera's illusion. Look at post before of torso in check shirt and note more fit presentation.

It's time to graduate from Bass Weejuns to Crockett & Jones. They're not cheap, but you can get good prices from Bodileys and Pediwear. Go for the Boston Cavalry:

Superb combo all around. I'm a fan of red socks, but I would go pink or a lighter color with this outfit.

As to Ivy's comment, I'm wondering if your silhouette would improve from a picture taking standpoint by standing up straight rather than kicking a foot out?

Excellent. I know it's balmy over there just beyond the Beltway. But since it's not officially Summer yet, and considering that Spring is just a few weeks old, mightn't madras be a tad premature? Just a question.

You actually seem to have lost weight right along your beltline, right along your waistline.

Cranky,

You know from past post that I have a collection of shell cordovan penny and tassel loafers. And in fact, they are from Crockett and Jones and Alden. The Weejuns are in the closet for memory sake, and because I like the worn brown leather look of this pair.

Lovely! I agree with the previous poster that the madras tie, while pretty, is somewhat too narrow to my eyes, though it could just be the photography.

Weejuns rock!!

Richie,
I was thinking of commissioning some custom brass blazer buttons with the mud-flap silhouette girl on them...you want in on the order?
Cranky Yankee? Ivy League? LBT? Suzy? Main Liner? Anony 1-38?

That's what I call an authentic sack jacket! (not one of those suppressed-waist jackets calling itself a sack because it doesn't have any darts).

I use my fraternity "Beta Theta Pi" coat of arms on my 14K blazer buttons and cuff links.
But thanks for the offer Richard.

The reason people think you look fat is that your blazer is waaaaay too big. It fits you like a sack. A 15 minute trip to the tailor and $35 - $50 later and he could take the sides in and make it actually fit correctly. People too often think that baggy clothing will hide a little paunch ... however, it makes it look much worse. I would suggest going at least a size down in the blazers in the future or getting it tailored to you. Also, pleated khakis are very 90s and also give you the impression of extra pounds. Lastly ... red socks with a pink Madras tie? Oh dear ... WASPs with so much money they don't care about others think could get away with this. However, socks should match tie/belt colors.
