Morris of Stockholm Fall/Winter 2010

I can honestly say that I do not own a piece of clothing from Morris of Stockholm, but my interest was peaked by these images. Certainly, they are not pure WASP or Ivy League, but they do capture some of their elements. I think I would describe this style as aristocratic preppy. Sure, I wouldn't wear clothes with this modern fit, but again, I like the overall style.

Absolutely superb.
Worth mentioning here,with the similarity
to Ralph Lauren. From now on when arguing
with another whether Polo RL is true WASP or
not, RL said it himself. HE IS a European
interpretation of Classic American style.
That ends that.

True WASP- J.PRESS, Andover Shop, and
related lines and specialty shops of
yesteryear,Brooks even....pretty boring to
be perfectly honest. Monstrously boring
IF, I say if ,to you ,TRUE WASP "STYLE"
IS the perfectly measured cuff, shirt
and/or pant leg perfectly "stiff",no
turning up the collar on an outerwear item,
no rolling up the sleeve on a casual jacket,
no shirt tail hanging out, no wearing a tie
loosely, you must look as "sharp" as a well
dressed mannequin.........how can one
argue and be in favor of pure.....blahhh.
There is a great amount of discussion
of what is exactly is TRADvsWASPvsIVY
vsPREP as you all well know.

Do some of you out there who are anti
Polo RL being called or identified as
WASP style HONESTLY IN FAVOR of
the boring, stiff ,wear the garment as intended,
no "tweaking" whatsoever, think that way is
.....style?" However, granted, there ARE
occasions where the perfectly stiff, no frills
look is called for, but, it would help
the discussion along once and for all
if there could be a consensus.

IS TRUE WASP STYLE, the boring mannequin,
for better or for worse, you see at JPRESS?
or is it a style that originated the "tweaks"
and "nuances" you see in this and PRL
catalogues? OR, did THAT come
from Europeans interpretations of
the WASP look?

The third shot with the three models on a boat that looks like it's sitting on a trailer may be the most ridiculous picture in this whole mess.

I agree with what Anonymous has said, except from the other side.

This stuff might be okay if worn properly, but there are too many instances of color-blind clashes and prissy faux nonchalance.

The felt under a coat collar, like the underpants of urban youth, is not to be seen. Flip a lapel in inclement weather, not because of some vulgar belief that exposing construction pieces is creative or rebellious or whatever.

Prep school kiddies have worn good clothes in goofy ways for eons; it is nothing new. Post-adolescents should be past it. An adult dressing to skirt the rules of a non-existent dress-code enforcer is beyond laughable.

Any true WASP worth his salt would not be seen dead in Polo.

Genuine English clothing, Brooks Brothers, J.Press--definitely.

Remember: WASP style is an interpretation, a derivative if you will, of le style anglais. It begins and ends with Britain.

Ok.....mmmmm. Flipping the collar only in
inclement weather for the purpose of buffering
the wind.Right.Like golfers and those who sail
started the turned up collar for practical
purposes of covering the neck for sun and
wind burn. Surely one can wear a collar up
though if it just happens to "work" for their
outfit? WHY NOT? Too much assumed
pretentiousness since it's a fashion quirk
originated by the well to do during their
wealthy habits of leisure?.......
More to the point WASP OR NOT
POLO RL HAS STYLE. COME ON,
alright I understand Mr Lipfitzshitz
doesn't have the real heritage and origins
history to be real anglo saxon.
But to be so picky as if there is NOTHING
in the history of POLO RL you could not
use your imagination and creativity to work
into your wardrobe under the "WASP STYLE"?

The mixing and matching aspect I REALLY
wish to address . SO, only earth tone
to earth tone? The moment you brighten up
a fall outfit with a spring bright ,you've killed
the "WASP" look? In other words on wayyyyy
too many fashion blogs and forums ,the
moment you add an OUNCE OF ,for lack
of a better word, panache,to your outfit
its no longer pure WASP they seem to say.
Alright then. TRUE BRITISH FASHION,
of yesteryear. Classic British style.
YES, by 1800 and early 1900 standards
POLO RL is too exaggerated.
AH, but here's the other point.
THE OLD MONEY LOOK. The idea that
your WASP inherited lifestyle is so second
nature to you that you DO wear the
$1,500 blazer and $2,500 pant as casually
as the rest wear their t shirt and jeans.
Hence the little relaxed nuances of turned
up cuffs and collars ,shirt tails showing
here and there,etc.......but then again...
are we saying THAT IS ONLY LEGIT-WHEN-
IT TRULY IS- an authentic handmedown
wardrobe from a 3rd or 4th generation?
The fashion quirks dismissed as not TRUE
WASP STYLE actually are IF you have the
seasoned and weathered,properly aged
wardrobe that over the years have faded
and lost shape ,great grandfathers shirts
may be one size too big or too small for
you but after all....it's Grandfather's
classic 30's stuff you have the luxury of
possessing. That's really it. What WASP
STYLE came to be known as. A style
that can ONLY COME FROM ONE SOURCE
LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE in WASPDOM.
INHERITANCE. You can imitate the look
of someone who has inherited an
aristocratic wardrobe and wears it ALL
CASUALLY. But to deliberately market
such a "style" just cannot be respected
the same. Basically it in a nutshell,YES?

I'm sorry, but the model in the third-from-last image looks like he's concealing a penchant for torturing small animals from a prospective one-night stand. Maybe it's just that he reminds me of a cousin of mine. Shudder.

Red socks on men are fey.

robbsurvivordude said...

My hair is immaculately combed. I'm wearing matchy socks and a tie under a sweater and a pocket square and all.

But I flipped my lapel in a dashingly twee manner! Please pretend that I just threw this on without a mirror and didn't notice this stiff gravity-defying style (because I don't really care about clothes or my appearance at all). It's just a coincidence that the collar felt is a complementary accent color.

Again, most of the individual pieces are quite nice. The faux crest/varsity logo nonsense is always tacky and lends an unwanted costume air to the stuff. There are typical color/formality mismatches a la Ralphy...

Laguna Beach Trad--

I respectfully disagree. Plenty of so-called true WASPs wear Polo. True WASPs are comfortable with the person they are. Then there are others...usually those who are snobs and pretentious, as demonstrated here...who feel that there are rules to be followed to prove themselves as someone or something they are not.

In addition the lack of any pretensions, as demonstrated by the most likely imaginary Worthington Warhol, demonstrates desperation to belong by adopting a ridiculous name and telling stories full of the things that they think bad boy WASPs enjoy. Instead, those people look like desperate wannabe Kennedys.

Sad, really.

And, it goes to show that the author of this blog will never, ever become to that which he longs to be.
