Herringbone is a classic tweed pattern for fall, and I absolutely love the fabric with a repp stripe tie. This LIFE image demonstrates the combination well.

I just think it was so gross how everyone smoked back then....look at this guy holding the ash tray and another guy with the cig in his face...yet they all still remain so pleasant

This is a simple classic look. Sporty but staid.
I suspect the Brits that originated each item would not pair them together and this is a uniquely American combination.
And you've got the Mad Men patriarch in that photo...and I betcha didn't even know.
