Head Turning Jackets

I absolutely love plaid jackets, but when wearing them today, heads always turn. I have several madras sport coats, and I have one plaid jacket that vaguely resembles the patch jacket below. However, I have not worn it in five or more years because it garners too much attention. I suppose I am writing this to ask a question to some of my 40 and 50 something readers. Did plaid jackets like the ones featured in the photos yield ghastly looks? Or, were they simply looked upon as traditional coats that one received compliments when wearing. And finally, were they just seen as the norm, and nobody said anything at all?
