Though this chap looks natural with a popped collar, the rest of the world without Ralph Lauren stage directors looks silly with popped collars. A popped collar has long been associated with preppy/WASP style, but it is just not an element that I ever admired. Honestly, I think it is a sign of a pretender and teenage immaturity. So, do yourself a favor and roll your blasted collar down.

I don't know, Richard, I think a popped collar can sometimes add a cavalier touch to an otherwise dull polo shirt.
On young guys the popped collar can look a bit douche-y.
On older gents it can communicate an "I don't give a f*ck" attitude.
I don't pop much myself, at least not deliberately.
Yes...a crucial question in these times...
First of all, a quarter century ago, Polo made collars that were short and stout enough to stay erect naturally. If you pulled the shirt on, the collar would just stay like that. It wouldn't look like you went out of your way,
Second, the collar is far from the worst thing going on in this photo. A knit shirt under tweed? The fruity rolled cuff? The backwards belt? Light jeans with tweed...
Third, why does he only have one popped collar? All the cool kids stack these things like crazy. The more layered collars in different colors, the icer you are. It so peeves the squares.
Richard,I cannot in good conscience comply with your request,as I find that a popped collar provides excellent protection from the brutal mid-afternoon sun,son...
Pop you collar for bush
Sorry, Richard - my collar stays popped at full attention. Otherwise I have a farmers tan on my neck regardless of how much sunscreen I wear.
Hi Richard, new reader to your blog and I must say I've thoroughly enjoyed reading over your posts.
With respect to the popped collar debate - I love a popped collar. I personally feel that popping works best when worn under a sweater (or a jacket or light cardigan). I am somewhat more reluctant to pop the collar if I'm just wearing a polo shirt on it's own, unless the collar is relaxed (and fans out away from the neck and rolls back toward the clavicles) or I am playing sport...
