If you only buy one suit this fall, make it a gray flannel suit. The suit screams WASP, and it can be dressed up or dressed down in many ways. Personally, I wish I had purchased a single breasted model for my first gray flannel suit, but I opted for a double breasted version instead. Therefore, I am planning to have another one made this fall, and I think I will give Polo its first chance to make a custom suit for me.

Richard, maybe it's the resolution on my monitor, but the man in the picture you posted seems to be wearing a donegal tweed suit, not a gray flannel one.
How would you go about dressing it down? And why? A nicely tailored gray flannel suit with a pair of oxblood cap toes is a breath of fresh air to the sea of navy suits and black shoes.
Make it a three piece.
The trousers should have a tab for wear without a belt. And don't wear the tie with the back blade loose and the front tucked into the waistband like the silly photo.
A home run, Richard! This is an essential component for every wardrobe. Works with anything. Especially single-breasted.
Brooks Brothers has those exact trousers and I want badly to pair them with a turtleneck and sports coat.
I agree with Anon 6:16 am, a high quality TNSIL three piece gray flannel suit is a vital element of of every gentlemen's wardrobe.
Suggest you acquire a MTM Martin Greenfield for Brooks Brothers Golden Fleece rig for two important reasons:
1. A gray flanned suit should be made from a very traditional 3 button natural shoulder pattern with a vest sans lapels per its linkage to Sloan Wilson's novel of the subject garment. Greenfield's apparel establishes that category.
2. While Polo MTM suite are nice, they are too stylized for such a traditional garment. In other words, do you want to look like a partner of the firm or member of the club or simply the acey-deucey gigolo who is chasing his daughter.
The choice is yours!
