Personally, I have always detested cummerbunds with single breasted evening wear, and for the first time ever, I plan to ditch mine this holiday season. In my opinion, going without the cummerbund provides a more debonair look......what are your thoughts?

The black tie ensemble looks incomplete without the cummerbund. Many shirts designed for formal wear have pleats or pique that ends above waistband of pants because the presence of the cummerbund is assumed.
When it comes to black tie, if you don't know what to do, see "Casino Royale" and get to the scene where Bond steps out of the bath in his tux. That is the standard. Whatever he wears, copy it.
The cummerbund is one of those in today out tomorrow...back in back out items.
I say go without this year..you will look just fine
Right again, Main Line Sportsman. Of course you need a cummerbund. When the invitation says, "Black Tie', you don't get to make or change the rules. That's the point.
I'm not sure I understand the question.
Well, if you have a vest or double-breasted tuxedo, of course you can skip the cummerbund.
But given Richard's tendency toward the unbuttoned coat, that crummy bare waistband with a shirt billowing over it will look pretty dreadful.
It depends on which airport you flew into when you went to the Rugby Cafe.
I'm for the cummmerbund (or, alternatively, DB smoking jackets).
The guy in the photo:
1. Is wearing a belt.
2. Is wearing a watch
3. Has no studs on his shirt.
Well, your punk rock mismatched plaid trew do have belt loops.
One should ALWAYS "Dress" the waist, unless you wear a double breasted model. Either a vest or cummerbund should be worn. Otherwise you risk looking like a cad! But it is your choice, Enjoy!
Wear a Cummerbund, if you not wearing double breasted jacket or vest. I recommend the needlepoint cummerbunds.
"Evening wear"? "Holiday season"? If Paul Fussell were dead he'd be spinning in his grave . . . .
A cummerbund is MANDATORY unless you're wearing a double breasted tuxedo, tails or a vest. And unless you're 170 - 185 pounds and 5'11'' - 6'1'', forget the double breasted tux.
