I wrote an award winning Senior Thesis on David Albert Edward Christan George Andrew Patrick David Saxe Coburg and found him to be a deceitful avaracious traitor of ambivalent sexual oriention.
That being said, my favorite "Dukes" are John "Duke" Wayne and Duke Ellington. Both were authentic Americans who enriched lives through their espert entertainment skills.
Up with the Yankee Dukes and Down with the English poff!
Old: Ambivalent as in bisexual, or sexually submissive? Deceitful traitor because of his supposed Nazi sympathies?
All quite possible. Or perhaps he just wasn't very bright and was easily manipulated. There's a fair amount of debate on these points.
According to biographers and historians, he seems to have encouraged his wife to treat him (literally) as a dog. Whipping and that sort of thing, rumour has it. Ouch!
Much of this may never be 'proven.' However, observers witnessed the verbal abuse and his pouting in response.
A sharp dresser with some unfortunate personality defects.
