Tweed With Yellow Socks - by Richard

I honestly think I may have an obsession with yellow socks! However, I think my obsession is a good one, because nothing is more preppy than pairing yellow socks with gray flannels, or today's choice, tweed. This image evokes the quintessential prep: tweed, yellow socks, loafers, and a club tie. Sure, the yellow socks go against the rules, but preppiness just happens to break a lot of those rules.

The model in the photo looks like he is wearing his little brother's suit...absurdly too small...

My guess is the yellow socks pairing originated in the 1980s when the Ivy League/Trad look was updated with brighter colors. However, there were some Ivy League purveyors that sold brighter colored tweeds etc. during the 1940s and 1950s.

MLS,
Ralph's suits are all cut too short. They barely cover what needs to be covered. It is not a good look.

Richard,

I too like the yellow socks. I have a pair on today with grey flannel trousers.

Yellow socks with gray or tweed is always a perfect choice! I agree this trend started in the 80's (Ralph Lauren might have been the first)..... It is also a preppy throw back to white socks worn with penny loafers and a school uniform (still the fashion in many prep and Catholic schools today)
Yellow socks are fun to wear...yellow argyle socks even better!

Yes, this works perfectly depending on ones personality. It really comes down if one is embracing the very 'conservative, reserved and traditional' look, or as Richard enjoys, the more 'colourful' contrasting look, which often plays on a humorous 'thumbing your Wasp nose at them' attitude - which can be quite fun.

Enjoy those yellow fellows!

I like yellow socks, but I prefer the 80s RL pairings better than the shrinking tweed look.

Great post...I have gone on a run buying yellow socks of all different shades as well, and it just so happens I will be wearing a pair with a pair of indigo blue pinstripe RL trousers tomorrow.

Also, I've noticed that the verbage of most of your post have changed a little. You're speaking more on "Preppie" style and not so much on WASPdom. The masses get to you just a little?
