Absolutely preppy. Dandys don't wear red trousers for a start or tank tops. For Dandy I personally think he would have to be channelling Oscar Wilde a Bit more. I don't think there are many Dandys any more. You must google search the magazine 'The Chap' by the way - terribly funny!
A good question... Certain details, like the embroiderted pocket patch, push it over the edge into dandy territory, IMHO, as if somebody were trying too hard to 'get it right.' The Nantucket Reds are mostly a Summer thing, while that sweater looks like it might not be. I know this is posed for an ad, but real life preppies - if the species even exists anymore - might sport slightly worn, frayed clothes. Just my two cents...
Sorry folks but the answer is neither... this is a picture of a "wanna-be". No dandy would dress with fake Nantucket reds (or even the real thing from Murrays) and no preppy WASP would wear "reds" not from Murrays (and these look like fake which are all over now.. J Crew, RL Polo, BB, and Vineyard Vines. Too many "wanna-be" people out there these days!
