Plaid Trunks and Luggage Sets - by Richard

There were days when the British aristocracy traveled with large trunks to carry their possessions as they traveled to the colonies in India, etc. Today, these trunks and heavy luggage sets are probably mostly used to decorate our homes. The set above is a Ralph Lauren edition, and though I show bias toward Mr. Lauren, I think he has designed some of the most beautiful luggage sets I have ever seen. If one is lucky enough to find such a treasure, I would suggest purchasing it immediately. Travel in style or decorate in style, it is your choice.

Who decorates their home with luggage? Very un-WASPy, Richard.

I'd recommend against decorating your house with luggage. It's not very dignified. Instead, try decorating with nice furniture and works of art. Poor people often try to get multiple uses out of their purchases. They buy dinner at a restaurant, but then try to save some "leftovers" for a subsequent meal. Some even buy cars to live and sleep in, rather than just for driving. The point is that decorating with luggage is, like those choices, very low class. You'd might as well nail a shoe to your wall or make a coffee table out of a wagon wheel.

I think I will purchase some plaid RL Luggage and then decorate my house. That would be doing both and I can guarantee I will not be decorating with luggage.

Seriously Ross? 'Poor' people often try to get multiple uses out of their purchases? And then you use 'leftovers' from a restaurant as an example.
My family owns several restaurants in Washington, DC. These are not fast-food chains, nor franchises. These are restaurants that YOU will not eat at becuase you will never be able to get reservations. Our patrons are very well-to-do and many of them take leftovers home. And I also know many well-to-do-people that decorate with things you normally wouldn't decorate with. Political analyst/strategist Frank Lunz has a gorgeous antique motorcycle sitting in the middle of his sitting room. It sounds tacky, but actually looks really cool. No, I wouldn't have something like that in my home, but it wouldn't exactly be very feminine for me to have that, I'm afraid.
I seriously have to shake my head at some of the comments I see on here sometimes.

I think 'decorate' may be the wrong word, but there's certainly nothing wrong with having an old steamer trunk kicking around. I think smaller luggage could look a bit weird sitting around the house, but trunks are great for storage and even for use as Bohemian coffee tables.
