Ralph Lauren Rugby Stores to Close

I just recently found out from Ralph Lauren Rugby's twitter site that they plan to shut down the Rugby brand by Feb. 2nd 2013.  I did not see this coming, and it is a sad day in the preppy world.  I personally loved their sport coats, sweaters, trousers, ties etc.  In fact, I just received a new shaggy sweater today and skull and cross bones slippers in the mail.  I can only speculate as to why Ralph is shutting down the brand, but I can only assume that he was losing money.  Again, this makes no sense.  He just expanded in London and Japan???  I guess this is a happy day for J Crew (not a fan) and Brooks Brothers Flat Iron concept stores.

Now, Ralph Lauren can once again focus on clothing for adults.

The only good thing about this is clearance prices maybe??? I really wish I could afford it :(

But what about guys who like to look like a caricature? Where are we going to get our crested pumps and skull and bones baseball caps? Are we expected to dress like adults now?

You do know that it is a publicly traded corporation, don't you? He is CEO and Chairman, but not likely he made the decision individually or that it was because "he" was losing money.

Does that you mean you just lost your job?

It is only speculation to say that he was losing money. However, why would one quit something that is profitable? I personally think it is a mistake, and I believe Polo will suffer losses with the younger generation. They had great shaggy shetland sweaters, and I loved many other items from the store. The models didn't always display the items as I would have, but the brand will be missed.

Richard,

Dreadful news indeed. Better get your chum to gas up the plane so that you can fly to Georgetown for one last lunch.

Look forward to seeing your new slippers.

OH NO, you won't be able to take your friend's airplane to Washington to eat at Rugby Cafe.

I know right!!! I think I will call my friend this weekend to see if we can venture to the Rugby Cafe before they close. Sure, there are better places to eat in D.C. but I have always thought the cafe was underated.

I'm sure Ralphy will keep the Rugby Cafe open for your pretend vacations.

Bright side. Check the outlet stores in the days leading up to the shut down. RL will most likely start shipping stuff to the outlets and they'll be on clearance at kill prices. We, obviously, wouldn't normally talk about cost(gauche) but the economy being what it is and all.

It's ok, Rick. At least Obama's still president.

Obama being president is far worse than the Rugby stores closing.

The Crestwood Dukes should have a meeting at the Rugby Cafe.

Well, at least Obama's WASP-ier than that other guy.

If only Romney had a better public relations team...

But only losers work in PR.

You should run for office, Richard. It would be hilarious.

I really thought the annual "Tweed Run" was very innovative and fun. Richard, do you know if Ralph will continue on with the Tweed Run despite Rugby's demise?

I was never a fan of the Skull and Bones merchandise anyway and hopefully now it will die and be buried as all bones should be;).

If you did not attend Yale and (most importantly) if you are not a member of the Skulls, then wearing it is deemed poseur, in my opinion. Other than being a "Bonesman", wearing a Jolly Roger is for Pirates only unless you work at Long John Silver's or are a pirate wannabe tike!

Other than the afformentioned, I will miss many of their jackets, sweaters, and ties.
