The Way Hunting Was Intended To Be

Hunting in today's American Society has become as one could say very "redneck".  Now, this isn't a post to throw off on the good ole boys of the south who have a huge 10 pointer hanging above their mantle, but it is a post to celebrate how the English and the aristocratic world used to do it.

When a gentleman hunts, he wears tweed, period!  Furthermore, he dresses as the gentleman pictured in the photo above.  Now, some may say that common folks could not afford such dress.  Nonsense!
Have you ever purchased hunting gear that these country folk today buy.  It is outrageous, and they could easily buy something from Orvis and look very dashing.

How many deer or animals have I killed?  Three!  While a young teenage boy, I shot a spike, six pointer, and the always coveted eight pointer.

So, when you go on the hunt, look like this gentleman.

Sorry, Richard. If I were to dress like the man in the photo, I am positively certain that I would end up with hypothermia fairly quickly along with a well deserved ass kicking. Hunting isn't about looking like you've just stepped out of a Ralph Lauren ad. If you were a true hunter and outdoorsman, you would know this.

I prefer to hunt in pink.

What nonsense. Tweed is only worn when at a driven estate shoot. However, it is more likely today that the "guns" would wear waxed cotton and knee high rubber boots. In all other forms of hunting...gear approriate to the conditions is required and the stylized photo here and your commentary is pure twaddle. I find it hard to fathom you wore twed as a teenage deer hunter. I also thought you said you had a taxidermy pheasant you had shot? No? Where are some photos of the 8 pointer?

Well you guys aren't WASPs then.

Barbour is acceptable.

Pink tweed is a thought.

You're a fool, Richie. The "aristocratic" don't even dress that way to hunt. One tweed jacket, maybe...but "The Lord of the Estate" look isn't done anymore. You must get out and actually see the real world. It has changed....and won't ever be 1901 again. Silly boy.

Just purchased a smashing tweed outfit from Ralph Lauren along with a wool cap from Rugby. Cant wait to go hunting.

Show us a picture of tweedy teen Rickster next to his prey.

Maybe true WASPs just don't exist anymore. Honestly, look at how Prince Willian dresses compared to his father. Though the WASP establishment was founded in the northeast, it all started with private schools in England.

What's the difference between "founding" and "starting"? Regardless, you overestimate the English influence on American WASPs. WASP society has never been dominated by want-to-be country squires. WASPs are urban and suburban types. I should know, as I'm from that culture.

I do agree with you that hunting was more of an event when people actually dressed in traditional Scot getup.....despite my earlier comment in referring to you as a fool. Please accept my apologies.

Sorry to correct you, but you are not talking about hunting at all, but shooting. Hunting is the pursuit of foxes on horseback. Yes, you will find on occasion men wearing full shooting attire. And, it is not private schools in England, but public schools (Eton, Harrow, Winchester, etc.).
