Making Over J Press

J Press is the crusty of the crusty in the Ivy League/Preppy World.  I do own a few of their garments, but I must admit, they don't fit as well as Ralph, Rugby, or Brooks.  However, you don't go to J Press to buy a fitted suit, you go there to get an ultra conservative 3/2 roll with zero shape.  You go there to pay $200 for a shaggy shetland, or to pick up a collegiate scarf.  To keep up with the rest of the preppy world, J Press has offered a small selection of slim fit items, and they are trying to give themselves a makeover with an Ovadia & Sons collection called York Street.

Personally, I think J Press will fail, because they haven't survived for as long as they have by trying to keep up with the latest trend.  However, I guess one could argue that their clients are slowly dying out, but the rest of the new world isn't a twig either.  So, I argue they will have new clients.  Plus, I would not pay the prices they will price their products at when I can have the likes of Polo or Brooks. A good example of this is their shetland sweaters.  Rugby sold them for $98 and you can get them for $41 on clearance.  Why pay the J Press asking price of $200.  Theirs are not that superior, and their sweaters are huge and too thick.

It's interesting how you've changed over the years, Richard. When you first started this blog, you were into two-button, darted jackets and uncuffed pants. Then you got on the whole 3/2 roll train for a while before making a sharp turn to the Rugby/Polo ultra slim look. What fashion trend will be next? I just hope it involves neon.

Very astute, Dickey.

Whatever, Anonymous. You don't stay at the forefront of the "preppy blogging movement on the Internet" without completely changing your wardrobe every year or so. Rick's a trendsetter. Or at least he's very quick to buy whatever he sees in advertisements.

Whatever, Non-anonymous. The ideology of prep has been around since before you and I were born. In the cyclical sense of trends, we are all laggards. Buying based on advertisement alone is low class, IMO. And completely changing your wardrobe is probably the dumbest idea I have ever heard! A mans wardrobe should age and develop, like my second wife who has not been born, yet. The prep trend is fully matured, and to label Rick as a trendsetter is doing the entire industry a disservice.
